The smartphone era may have been started by Apple, but Google’s Android phones still dominate the market – particularly outside the United States.

It’s no surprise considering that a wide variety of manufacturers produce Android handsets ranging in price from low to high. This means that there’s probably a pair of Androids to suit almost anyone’s tastes.

Globally, Samsung is the biggest Android manufacturer, but US buyers will also have the option of choosing Motorola, Sony, OnePlus, or Google’s own Pixel phones. Besides North America, Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and more are competing fiercely.

Therefore, you can find plenty of variety – far more than you can get from the few iPhone models released every year. In addition to the wave of new form factors currently hitting the market, Android users have the option of novel form factors such as foldable phones. Samsung leads but the competition is catching up.

Because Android is so open, you don’t need to stick with Samsung just because you currently use one. There’s no reason to be discouraged if you’re an iPhone user since switching to Android is easier than ever.

1. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra – Best Android phone

Pros

Cons

• Large in size
• Costly

With its distinct design and a built-in S-Pen slot, the Galaxy S22 Ultra feels more like a resurgence of Samsung’s Note brand.

In addition to a 108MP main shooter, the phone also features ultrawide and two telephoto lenses with different zoom levels – with improved zoom performance over previous models.

It supports S-pen stylus support and provides WQHD+ resolution at 120Hz, as well as WQHD+ resolution at LTPO AMOLED display.

2. Google Pixel 7 Pro – Best Software

• Cameras with incredible versatility
• Long battery life
• Features unique to the software

Cons

• Divisive design
• Big and heavy
• Slow charging

A Pixel phone has always been about the camera, and the 7 Pro’s camera – while not quite our favourite at the moment – is absolutely fantastic, offering versatility thanks to the ultrawide and periscopic zoom lenses.

However, Google’s software gives the phone an edge. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat, with all of Google’s excellent Pixel-exclusive features, and it is powered by the company’s second-generation Tensor chip which is now powered by the company’s own algorithms.

In addition, you’ll have to accept that this is a big phone with a divisive design – you may love it, but others may not. Despite having a slightly more basic display and a smaller screen, the regular Pixel 7 is a little smaller (and cheaper).

3. Vivo X80 Pro – Best camera

• Long-lasting battery

Cons

• Costly
• Gorilla Glass is not included
• Unresponsive software

There’s no doubt Vivo is worth paying attention to, even if you’ve never heard of them before.

Currently, Vivo is a giant in the Chinese smartphone market, and is slowly expanding internationally, which is a good thing since it’s no secret that Vivo makes the best cameras for phones.

There are four phenomenal rear cameras on the X80 Pro, so it’s no exception. There are two zoom lenses and a 50-megapixel lens, but it’s the 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens that really sets it apart from the competition. Low light is where the tech really shines, with hands-down the best night mode on the market.

There are a lot of great features on this phone as well, including an excellent battery life and a display that’s up to par. Although the company’s Android skin is slightly awkward, it’s hard to find a better camera for this price.

4. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 – Best foldable

Pros

• Beautiful design
• Features of the highest quality
• Waterproof
• Cost-effective (for a foldable)

Cons

• Telephoto camera is not available
• Doubts remain regarding durability

It was fun to see Samsung’s first foldable devices, but they sometimes felt like novelty items. It’s obvious that Samsung got it right with the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

With a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in tow, the core specs are excellent, and the 12Mp camera is impressive, though a telephoto lens would have been nice.

When compared with its predecessors, its battery life is now impressive, easily lasting a full day of use. If you want the folding screen to last as long as Samsung says it will, you’ll just have to take a chance.

However, if you want something more substantial, the Z Fold 4 isn’t quite as good as its smaller sibling due to a higher price, dodgy under-display camera, and software quirks.

5. Google Pixel 6a – Best Smart phone.

• Performance of the highest calibre
• Size is smaller
• Excellent camera quality
• Updates that are guaranteed

Cons

• Easy to scratch the rear plastic
•  Hot and slow charging
•  The display is only 60Hz

For those who cannot afford the Pixel 7 Pro or 7, Google offers the Pixel 6a instead, which is more affordable than the Pixel 7 Pro or 7.

With its flagship Tensor chip and familiar design, this mid-range phone offers similar performance to its higher-end brothers. However, it is much smaller and made of plastic rather than glass.
